How a teenage girl builds self-confidence through her small business

Over the past year, our lives have become increasingly digitized and, for many of us, our once busy, social days have turned into hours spent browsing social media.

At first it was fun. From videos on how to make whipped coffee to the many renegade dance routines, social media was the escape from reality we all desperately needed. But now my TikTok for you page and Instagram feed are punctuated with filters and light transition videos and beauty gurus that have managed to damage my confidence and self-esteem.

I’ve seen other girls express their frustration at not looking like the impossible influencer and even more girls criticize themselves over the new insecurities that have bloomed on social media. Let’s face it: being a teenager is tough. But as the end of the pandemic nears and the weather warms up, it’s important to remember that you’re not alone.

Among the many allies is Srihitha Gattem, owner of Skye Jewelry. Her small business aims to promote self-confidence through her affordable pieces designed to be worn by everyone.

Srihitha started her business in January this year, and she has already achieved major success and reached many girls. She told me she loves owning a small business and all the “marketing” and “creative control” that comes with it. She particularly enjoys “spreading positivity [and] meet new people,” which compliments her talent for jewelry making.

She explained that “a few years ago I realized that I wanted to create a positive impact and spread positivity in this world. Everyone is beautiful in their own way and no one deserves to feel less. Especially with any hate and negativity on social media these days, I decided it was finally time for me to create that change.

This change has materialized in Skye Jewelry which not only sells necklaces in the form of enamel necklaces, earrings and necklaces of gold-plated gemstones, but also encouragement for self-esteem and a positivity global.

With her super cute and affordable pieces, Srihitha hopes to spread “smiles and confidence” to girls of all ages so they can feel good about themselves every day.

Arguably one of the best things about jewelry is that a little sparkle or a splash of color is enough to make you want to go out.

But Srihitha and Skye Jewelry goes far beyond pretty products when it comes to uplifting other girls and promoting confidence. She uses her Instagram and TikTok platforms to spread positivity and remind girls that they are beautiful and should feel good about themselves. While not a new idea, it’s certainly refreshing to see it pursued by a teenager who understands the challenges that come with being a teenager in today’s world.

The savvy entrepreneur often posts “short passages, quotes or just a few words” on his story to remind people “that they are amazing the way they are”. She also tries “to talk about loving yourself, going against misogyny and learning to stand up for yourself!”

Skye Jewelry isn’t just about sales, it’s about making girls feel more empowered and giving them quality products to remind them of their strength.

And of course, small businesses are never complete without the personalization that comes with every order, and Skye Jewelry is no exception.

Srihitha likes to “add personalized handwritten notes to every order, add a few comments with compliments or just positive things to say.” And once her happy customers show off their new looks, Srihitha posts pictures they send in to “share them and let them know a little bit!”

In general, the owner of Skye Jewelry tries to build a supportive community where positive vibes abound and everyone can come together to be optimistic and support each other.

Srihitha is more than just a small business owner – she is a beacon of hope and inspiration to girls struggling with self-confidence and body image. As an ally, her DMs are always open and she’s always available to talk, which makes her small business even more unique.

The jewelry made by Srihitha may be all about the metal and the shine, but they are symbols of the beauty we all have within us, and Skye Jewelry really makes a big part of the little shop.

Srihitha left me this advice which perfectly sums up his passion when it comes to self-confidence and his small business: “The only thing that matters is your happiness, so go ahead and take care of yourself! Go have fun with your friends, eat that ice cream, wear whatever YOU want! Take your life. Believe me, it doesn’t matter what that random person thinks about. If someone is giving you negative vibes and criticizing your body, that’s not the case. The pain. Your. Time. Remember that you hold a special place in this world that no one can replace. You are loved, and we just want you to be happy in your own skin!
