Summer is here, school is out and the barbecues are heating up. This is the season when you spend most of your time in the sun, and now is not the time to get lazy wearing sunscreen! (think painful sunburn)
You’ve probably heard that sunscreen is important. In fact, it’s the most basic product in our skincare routine that should be worn daily, regardless of the weather and season. You heard it right! — sunscreen is just as important in winter, on a rainy day or even when you are indoors. I know sometimes wearing sunscreen can be so complicated, but as someone who struggles with acne, my dermatologist made it clear to me that even if you’re going to spend a minute in the sun, sunscreen is a must. .
Sunlight is essential for bodily functions such as vitamin D production, but too much sun exposure does more harm than good. The ultraviolet (UV) radiation we receive from the sun can damage the skin. Studies have shown that 95% of UV rays reaching our skin are ultraviolet A (UVA), which is responsible for chronic effects such as wrinkles, photoaging and age spots. The smaller percentage, ultraviolet B (UVB), which can be more harmful, is the main cause of sunburn. There is also ultraviolet C (UVC), which fortunately is completely absorbed by the atmosphere and will not reach our skin or cause any damage.
Here are the main reasons why applying sunscreen should become a daily habit:
1. Protects your skin from UV rays
With the depletion of the earth’s ozone layer, the risk of skin damage caused by UV rays, especially UVB, has increased considerably. UV rays are the cause of 90% of premature skin aging. Additionally, exposure to UV rays can damage the DNA of skin cells, leading to skin cancer. Therefore, it is important to wear an appropriate sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect your skin from serious damage.
2. It reduces the risk of skin cancer
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. About one in five people may develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Both UVA and UVB rays can cause skin cancer. However, applying sunscreen every day halves the risk of getting skin cancer.
3. Avoid the signs of premature aging
Premature skin aging has been linked to prolonged exposure to UV rays. Sun damage can cause discoloration, sagging skin and wrinkles. Studies have shown that people under 50, who regularly apply sunscreen, are less likely to develop these signs of aging.

Regular application of sunscreen helps prevent any type of skin discoloration, pigmentation and dark spots caused by harmful UV rays. thus helps to maintain an even complexion.

In a world where everyone is obsessed with skincare, I’m sure the goal is to have healthy skin. Dermatologists have pointed out that skin is simply healthier when using sunscreen regularly. Vital skin proteins such as keratin are protected when you wear sunscreen.
How to choose the perfect sunscreen?
Choosing the best sunscreen can be very difficult since today we have a variety of sunscreens in the market. It is recommended to use a sunscreen of SPF 30 or more, which blocks 97% of UV rays. Also look for sunscreen labeled “broad spectrum” to protect against both UVA and UVB.
Recently, Japan established the PA rating system to inform consumers of the level of UVA protection. When buying sunscreen products or cosmetics, it is suggested to look for PA+++ (the more “+” signs, the better). Also, it is recommended to use sunscreen or stick for more protection instead of sunscreen spray.

How to properly apply sunscreen?
It is recommended to wear sunscreen 10 to 30 minutes before sun exposure and to reapply every 2 to 3 hours. You should apply enough sunscreen to fill a shot glass, which is about 1 oz or an easier method is to apply a generous 3 fingers amount of sunscreen (apply sunscreen along 3 fingers then transfer on the face, neck or any other part of the body)
For added protection, use an SPF-infused lip balm for the lips and wear sunglasses.
