How to be as bold as the women of “The Bold Type”

The fat guy premiered on Freeform (formerly known as ABC Family) in June 2017 and now has three full seasons, with the fourth season releasing in 2020. The show is about three millennial best friends who work at Scarlett Magazine in New York City. They juggle their careers, their relationships and grow as bosses. These three best friends who work at Scarlett are absolute goals!

  • Jane Sloan: a new editor for .com and the print magazine who wears her heart on her sleeve
  • Kat Edison: Scarlett’s Social Media Manager, the youngest to ever hold that title and incredible overall direction of that department
  • Sutton Brady: started out as an assistant but decides to pursue her dream of being more involved with Scarlett in fashion

These three women make up the female protagonists of The Bold Type. So let’s dive into the Power Pose way and embrace your inner bold type.

Be inspired by other strong women

Connecting with characters like the strong female empowerment leads in The Bold Type is important for any viewer, as the show provides insight into understanding, loving what you do, and realizing that no one has to go through difficult times in life alone.

Early in the series, Kat begins to question her sexuality and what it means to find herself before giving it all to someone else. Jane, I would say the most driven by what her heart tells her and her emotions, is going through so many personal ups and downs and huge learning curves about how the world around us continues to function. Being together has helped them overcome obstacles and come to terms with what is happening in their lives. Viewers can connect with all of these different perspectives.

Thrive in your successes and rise from the falls

Not only is Kat the youngest social media manager Scarlett has ever seen, but she’s also the first black female head of a department who also decides to run for mayor in Season 3. She wants to take a risk on something she is passionate about.

In Season 2, Jane took a risk by following a different path with her career in journalism and writing. Sutton took a chance on following her dream rather than just finding something with the degree she had, which isn’t a bad thing. They work under Jacqueline Carlyle, the magazine’s editor-in-chief inspired by Cosmopolitan Magazine’s Joanna Coles, who is an incredible mentor to all the girls and has so much experience in the industry, with life and communication.

From Jacqueline, these three friends learned to be proud of their successes and of each other, as well as to accept difficulties and falls, to get up gracefully and to move forward on the right foot. We can all be our own Jacqueline and still try our power moves even if it means we fail and have to move on.

Stand up for what you believe in

What’s so great about this show is that it has dynamic characters that sometimes surprise us because the writers spend time creating a climate similar to ours now that surrounds the show to incorporate how these women would deal with the challenges that we see or read about now.

Kat is definitely the strong, sometimes overly stubborn character who stands up 101% of the time for everything she believes in. She knows how to use social media to her advantage to help people spread messages about positive ways to get involved in communities. and how she represents Scarlett to do those things too.

If you feel like you don’t know how to get involved or want to find things you are passionate about, Kat is someone to look up to. Sutton’s character believes in her 1000% and is one of the most driven characters to follow her dreams and know what she wants. We can all figure out how to follow our passions, help people, and get involved.

The world belongs to you

Sometimes being selfish helps you be more generous and sometimes the world can revolve around you. You want to find a balance between your happiness and that of others. You want to go beyond your limits and get that job, that position, whatever you want, might as well go for it. The world is full of opportunities that we can all seize! Sutton experiences Paris Fashion Week and is part of the crème de la crème of the fashion world. Jane can write about so many stories and grow as a writer! The world is at our fingertips and we can certainly make the world our own.

Friendships can last a lifetime

As we go through the struggles and successes of our lives, it would be great to share it with friends who are close to our hearts. Friends who help you become better, have fun with you, laugh with you, cry with you, and love the world with you.

That’s why Sutton, Jane and Kat are best friend goals! Supporting each other, sharing advice, even being real with each other because we know not everything is crystal clear, happy and lucky all the time. Hearing reality and truth from our best friends shows growth and true love because we want the best for each other. Sometimes friendships fade, but sometimes they are magical and are some of the best times in our lives and they can last forever.

Being bold and true to ourselves can be scary, but it’s great to have shows like this help us put into perspective how we can be a little bolder and live our best lives.
